The collaboration between Protosdemos and Puumerkki has evolved from a chance encounter into a strategic partnership. When Lasse Laine opened an account at the Turku terminal over 12 years ago, it marked the start of a journey that has since produced numerous distinctive projects – ranging from designer villas to modular saunas. Protosdemos counts on Puumerkki’s comprehensive product range, dependable delivery, and expert service. Together, they have brought to life spaces where wood can truly shine.
A long partnership born by chance
Protosdemos designs and manufactures fully customized wood-based spaces – from hotel and restaurant interiors to designer furniture and loose furnishings. The company’s portfolio also includes modular small houses and saunas, produced under the Aito Sauna and Space of Mind brands.
The collaboration with Puumerkki began over 12 years ago by chance. The company’s founder, Lasse Laine, visited the Turku terminal and opened an account immediately. Production later moved to Salo in 2014, and the partnership with Puumerkki has continued ever since.
Extensive selection, unique solutions
Protosdemos has a wide and varied need for timber materials. The company orders from Puumerkki, among other things:
- durable wood
- UPM plywood
- OSB panels
- laminated boards and laminates
- three-layer panels
Puumerkki’s extensive product range has been instrumental in sourcing materials. Through the collaboration, Protosdemos has also discovered new, unique suppliers such as Rema and Egger, enabling even more specialized solutions for its projects.
Villa Junnila – a shared showcase in Ruissalo
One of the finest examples of this collaboration is Villa Junnila in Ruissalo, Turku, Finland. Ruissalo, a scenic island in Turku known for its natural beauty and historic villas, provides the perfect setting for the design villa. The property was designed by Protosdemos’ owner, Lasse Laine, and nearly all materials were sourced through Puumerkki.
The interiors of this design villa have been completely renovated, resulting in a timelessly elegant finish. The flooring features Timberwise chevron-patterned antique oak parquet, and all built-in furniture has been custom-made by Protosdemos. The interior design skillfully combines vintage furniture with products from Dusty Decon and Made by Choice, creating a unique and enduring atmosphere.

Collaboration continues – and evolves
As demand for modular cabins and saunas grows, so does the need for materials. In the future, Protosdemos hopes to expand the collaboration further into storage services as well as pre-processed and surface-treated products that simplify installation and speed up production.
